Where the Highway Ends, the Adventure Begins | Lieke & Killian’s San Josef Bay ElopementThere are some places that stay with you long after you’ve left. San Josef Bay is one of them.
Tucked away on the northwestern edge of Vancouver Island, this stretch of coastline feels like a world of its own. The walk through the forest opens onto a sweeping beach framed by sea stacks, weathered driftwood, and almost-tropical sand. It’s wild and undeniably special.
It’s easy to understand why Lieke and Killian chose to travel all the way from the Netherlands to get married here.
After making our way through the forest of towering giants and arriving at San Josef Bay, L+K got ready amongst the beach’s iconic sea caves, with the gentle sound of waves rolling onto shore in the background.
Lieke carried a beautiful bouquet created by Hyde Creek Flower Farm, bringing a touch of locally grown florals to the rugged coastline. Against the soft sand, barnacle-covered rocks, and glittering ocean, it felt perfectly at home.
As they shared their vows, the landscape didn’t just serve as a backdrop—it became part of the moment. A reminder of how vast and beautiful the world can be, and how meaningful it is to find someone you want to share it with.
One of my favourite parts of the day came afterward, as we made our way back out of Cape Scott Provincial Park. We stopped at the historic Scarlet Ibis Pub in Holberg to raise a glass and celebrate with a toast. After a day spent on a remote beach at the edge of the island, it felt like the perfect ending—a chance to soak in the reality that they were officially married.
For me, San Josef Bay never loses its magic. Every visit feels a little different. The light catches the sea stacks differently with each season, the weather shifts, and the ocean is never quite the same. Yet it always leaves me with the same feeling: gratitude for places like this that exist so close to home.
Watching Lieke and Killian experience it for the first time made it all the more special.
Thousands of kilometres from home, they chose this little corner of the world—where we say “where the highway ends and the adventure begins”—to celebrate their love.
